Cub Scouting at the 18th |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Cub Scouts are boys and girls aged between eight and ten-and-a-half years old. They belong to the second section of the Scouting family and are arguably the most well known and recognised scouts of all the scouting sections. Cubs wear a dark green uniform and benefit from a broad scouting programme. There are loads of fun things to do as a Cub Scout. Activities such as swimming, music, exploring, climbing and archery are just a few of the vast amount on offer. If a Cub does them properly they will get a badge which they can wear on their uniform. Our main aim is to provide a programme of fun, engaging, adventurous activities which allow children to develop their own skills, talents and sense of self. We achieve this through weekly pack meetings, camps and days out where we'll encourage the Cubs to; get to know other people, learn about them self, explore the world around them, discover creative and practical skills, and explore beliefs and attitudes. The 18th hold at least 2 Cub Camps a year, which is usually the first time that a scout will spend a prolonger period of time away from home, either in tents or indoor accommodation. In the past we've visited the local panto at Christmas and gone on hikes. We've gone on trips to Duxford and Milton Country Park for exploring and occasionally join other local packs for an evening of fun and games. As well as our usual weekly meetings we take the opportunity to attend numerous District activities where Cubs from across Cambridge come together for big scouting events, such as the District Cub Camp, District Hike, District Chess Competition and District Swimming Gala. The cost of Cub Scouting at the 18th is £20 per term. This covers the cost of the Scout Association membership and insurance, as well as weekly activity costs. As the 18th is a sponsored group, the Church of the Good Shepherd allow us to use their facilities for free, providing we attend special services twice a term. Cubs, like all scouting sections, is a uniformed movement which means a member must wear the correct uniform to meetings. The cost of the uniform is around £15 and includes the dark green sweatshirt/jumper, necker, woggle, membership badges and investiture certificate. These can be purchased from the Group, online at scoutshops.com or from the Scout Shop at 195 Perne Road (6:45-8:30pm - Mondays & Wednesdays). If the Cub is moving on from Beavers, they will just need the Cub jumper. In order for a child to become a Cub Scout, they are expected to wear uniform, attend at least 4 'starter meetings', learn about the basic history of scouting and be able to accept and recite the Cub Scout Promise and Law: CUB SCOUT PROMISE CUB SCOUT LAW On completing all 4 of these objectives, the child will partake in a small investiture ceremony where they'll officially become members of the group and the worldwide scout movement. If the Cub was formerly a Beaver, they will also receive a 'Moving on' badge as a sign they have successfully made the transition. CUB SCOUTING ACTIVITIES
