Sixers and Seconders in Special Cub Day |
||||||||||||||||||
The 32 participants were split into 4 teams and started the event with games, a wide game and activity bases. They made origami water bombs, Mother's Day pasta pictures, build a variety of objects through spaghetti and marshmellow pioneering and learnt about the history of Grand Howl, Flag Break and other Scouting formalities. The main challenge of the day was to build a shelter for four people that could withstand wind and rain. To test each shelter, four of the Cubs had to crawl inside and avoid getting soaked when bombarded with water. Cubs could only use materials spread across the site, but to strengthen their chances, Cubs were asked five general knowledge questions to earn some additional resources which they could use to build the shelter, such as string, plastic bags, sellotape, clothes pegs and garden canes. From then on, teams had one-hour to build...with only the assistance of one leader to advise, and the entire site to scavenge. As the sun began to set, the Cubs had to build a fire so they could cook their own foil-wrapped sausage and potatoe dinner in the dark. Pudding followed a similar feat, with mushy banana and melted chocolate buttons on the menu. Then after a little bit of running about with torches, everyone gathered for a campfire sing-song before heading home.
"Days like this give us an ideal opportunity for the Sixers and Seconders to learn their duties. It also gives them an opportunity to be a more than just a 'Cub with another badge' and from a leader's point of view it allows us to share ideas and resources." Tristan and Barton, aged 10 both commented, "It's been really good and we've really liked having a day that's just for us. It's been really fun and we liked building the shelter and cooking on the fire most."
