Cubs Get a Soaking at District Cub Camp |
||||||||||||||||||
Prior to the Cubs arriving late on Friday evening, Akela, Hathi, Baloo and YoYo spent much of the day pitching tents in what became known as "Cub Alley". But as the cubs started arriving, the fun really kicked off. The Cubs spent Friday evening playing a wide game over the entire camp site. They had to exchange fake money for higher denominations held by various leaders hidden in the woodlands. The team who amassed the most fake cash won. Saturday started early...5:30am to be exact. The morning saw the first phase of badge work, with 8 different badges to choose from. Some of the Cubs opted for adventurous activities; such as pond dipping in the Granta and fire lighting, whilst others opted for practical skills like navigating, communicator and map reading. There was also a creative element on offer, with Artist and Entertainer both available. After lunch, the 18th gathered together for water activities. Starting with the water slide, they trekked from bases to base, having a go at water conservation, launching water rockets, catapulting water bombs and becoming targets in the stocks. To warm them up, each Cub was offered a cup of hot chocolate and a chance to sing around the giant campfire. Sunday saw the second session of badge work, with Cubs opting for different badges to the ones they did the day previous. The remaining time was given over to play, lunch and taking down tents. The final hour was dominated by a Tug of War. The 18th A Team breezed through the first and second rounds but were eventually beaten by a team from the 14th/54th and the eventual winners, the 50th Cambridge. The 18th B Team fell at the first hurdle, but battled bravely. The camp ended with Grand Howl and a special presentation to Simon Gates (YoYo), courtesy of long-standing ally and school friend Chris Gawthrop-Bleet (Baloo). Chris presented Simon with a signed copy of the 1949 scouting book "The Left Handshake" to recognise his ongoing commitment and devotion to changing the lives of young people through scouting. Each Cub went home with a pirate hat, courtesy of Akela, and a pop-gun brought with the funds raised at Christmas.
