18th Revive Scout Troop

New Troop opens with 4 ScoutsAfter a 10 year absence, the 18th are pleased to welcome 10-14 year olds to group after reviving the Scout Troop.

The troop's revival follows months of discussion between leaders and a desire for the third tier of scouting to return to the group.

Three of the senior Cubs have moved up to the section over the summer, with Matthew Brown, a scout with the 26th Cambridge, joining the troop as a Patrol Leader. The new members will be invested into the troop at the up'n'coming Group Camp in October.

Simon Gates, who is acting as Scout Leader until a permanent adult team is established commented;

"I believe it's important for the so-called 'scouting family' that these kids have an opportunity to continue scouting with the group, kids and leaders they've grown up with. The 18th are now able to offer young people scouting from aged 6 right through to 14."

The troop will be working towards their Community Challenge Badge over the Autumn Term, with trips to the Folk Museum, a litter pick, a treasure hunt around Arbury Park and a DIY Project all in the pipeline. They will also prepare for some media work, with potential visits to the Cambridge Evening News Printing Press and BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

The Scout Troop meet alongside Cubs on Mondays during school term time. However, it is hoped the meetings may eventually be moved to a Thursday after Beavers as the troop gets bigger.

Simon is confident the troop will grow from 4 members to 10 members in the space of a year.

The 18th's sponsor, the Church of the Good Shepherd, will also show their support to the troop by re-dedicating the Troop flag during a special church service in October or November.
