Sixers & Seconders show off Scouting Skills

Sixers DayCub Sixers and Seconders from across Cambridge District have come together for a special day of Scouting activities at Abington.

10 of the 18th's high-ranking Cubs took part in the day, which tested a vast range of practical outdoor skills in a fun and adventurous way.

The 48 participants were split into 5 teams and started the event with a wide game based on cluedo, followed by games and activity bases. They learned how to use a compass, basic first aid, pioneering with garden canes and learnt about the history of Grand Howl, Flag Break and other Scouting formalities.

The main challenge of the day was to build a shelter for four people that could withstand wind and rain. To test each shelter, four of the Cubs had to crawl inside and avoid getting soaked when bombarded with water. Cubs could only use materials spread across the site, but to strengthen their chances, Cubs were asked five general knowledge questions to earn some additional resources which they could use to build the shelter, such as string, plastic bags, sellotape, clothes pegs and garden canes. From then on, teams had one-hour to build...with only the assistance of one leader to advise, and the entire site to scavenge.

As the sun began to set, the Cubs had to build a fire so they could cook their own foil-wrapped sausage and potatoe dinner in the dark. Pudding followed a similar feat, with mushy banana and melted chocolate buttons on the menu. Then after a little bit of running about with torches, everyone gathered for a campfire sing-song before heading home.
